Depression is rampant in our world today. It is a serious disorder that can be treated. Millions of people are under the influence of depression and they have no family or friend that can help. As much as I believe a depressed person is the only one that can help himself out of that state, he needs a companion or someone who he can call on to to share his problems and help him become better. You may experience difficult emotions when someone you love is depressed such as frustration and anger. There are steps to helping a depressed person. Learn about depression and how to talk about it with that person. You don't have to be quick to give your opinion about what your friend or family member is going through. Being a good listener might help too. A lot of people just need people to listen to them. They need people to ask them what's wrong and they start spilling everything. They get teary, angry, frustrated and helpless. It's part of the process.
Depressed people isolate themselves from others.
Never be negative with a depressed person.
Ask what you can do to help.
Be a good and compassionate listener.
Always check up on them or check up on them most times
Remind them how important their existence is.
NEVER put suicidal thoughts in their mind.
Don't act like you've been in every situation and tell them you know how it feels and they better snap out of it. It breaks them.
Encourage them to get help. That is, visiting a physician.
Lead by example.
Above are the list of ways to help your depressed friend or family member. PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE DOs and DONTs.
